Researching for Investing

Pick an area of interest - Pick an area of the economy or one sector that interests you such as technology, banking, retail or utilities.

Learn about that area or sector - Research those companies that are involved in that sector. There are a number of resources available @ Morton Grove Public Library to assist you in your research.

    If you feel the need for more control over your financial future and are not convinced a financial planner is for you, you might want to join an investment club. This book helps you decide if this is an option and then tells you how to go about setting up and organizing such a group.

    Financial advisor Christopher Brooke predicts the effects of the retirement of the Baby Boom generation on investments, equity markets, bonds, and more. Dorsey, Pat.   The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing: Morningstar's Guide to Building Wealth in the Market .   2004.    332.6322 DOR.
    The Five Rules covers both the broad facts of stock investing for the novice as well as more detailed information for the advanced investor. Dorsey, the founder of Morningstar, also provides several chapters dealing with investing in specific types of markets, such as health care, banks, and media.
Loeb, Marshall.    52 Weeks to Financial Fitness: The Week-by-Week Plan for Making Your Money Grow.    2001.   332.024 LOE.
    An analogy is made between physical and financial fitness; it may be hard to get started, but once you set up a schedule, you will see how easy it is to follow. This financial fitness program starts with the basics and moves you forward week-by-week to the peak of financial performance.
Kansas, Dave.    The Wall Street Journal Complete Money & Investing Guidebook.   2005.    332.6 KAN.
    The Guidebook outlines the foundation and principles of investing in a no-nonsense manner, covering stocks, bonds, main street, and more. It offers helpful lists of online resources and suggested reading at the end of each chapter.
Mattive, Nilus.    The Standard & Poor's Guide for the New Investor.   2004.    332.632 MAT.
    Standard & Poor's Guide offers guidelines for new investing, no matter the age of the investor. It covers and defines basic topics - stocks, bonds, funds, and retirement accounts - but also features helpful information about how debt fits into a long-term financial plan.

    The Guide offers a broad range of information for the novice investor, covering the topics of stocks, bonds, indexes, mutual funds, options, and futures. With an abundance of helpful diagrams and easy to understand definitions, difficult concepts can be understood with ease.
Panzer, Michael J.    The New Laws of the Stock Market Jungle.   2005.    332.6322 PAN.
    Seasoned veteran of the stock, bond, and currency markets, Michael Panzer discusses changes in equity investing. While these changes have already altered investment practices and behaviors, The New Laws offers advice on how to capitalize on them. More experienced investors will benefit most from Panzer's rules.

    Following the investing philosophy of Warren Buffett, How Buffett Does It outlines 24 investing strategies. Buffett's philosophy is simple: be patient, choose the tried and true stocks, and invest for the long term.
Swensen, David F.    Unconventional Success: A Fundamental Approach to Personal Investment.   2005.    332.6327 SWE.
    Swensen argues that the average individual investor is consistently short-changed and underserved by the for-profit mutual fund industry. To resist this trend, individual investors must take the unconventional approach of diversifying their portfolios and matching them up to market standards: mimicking the market.
Tobias, Andrew P.    The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need.   2005.    332.024 TOB.
    The title says it all. This updated edition of a very popular investment guide offers the latest word in financial legislation and has expanded to include Internet investing. The book covers topics on having enough money to send your children to college through having enough money to live comfortably and still leave assets to your heirs.
Wasik, John F.    The Kitchen-Table Investor: Low-Risk, Low-Maintenance Wealth-Building Strategies for Working Families.    2001.   332.6 WAS.
    Although this book is not as detailed as other books on basic investing, it has appeal because of the easy-to-understand examples and sound advice offered to the beginning investor with less disposable income to invest.
