  About Ref Chat

Who staffs this service?
Our live chat service is staffed by real librarians at the Morton Grove Public Library. Not only do we answer your questions via live chat, but we also answer them on the phone, via e-mail, and in person at the Adult Reference Desk. Since real people are running the chat service, please be aware that from time to time there may be slight delays in response time. We make every effort to answer questions quickly!

Who can use live chat?
Any adult or teen (grade 7 and up) can use live chat.

What is IM and how does it work
IM stands for "instant messaging," a type of real-time communication between people, usually via the Internet. To instant message, you and the person with whom you are communicating must have some type of IM software. If you want to ask us a question, just send a message to our Screen Name, askmgpl. This Screen Name works for AIM, Yahoo, and Google Talk.

No IM software?
If you don't have IM software, don't worry. You can download it for free. If you don't want to download software, you can use web-based software, such as AIM Express, or the chat box on the Ask a Librarian page.
