Computer Instruction for Patrons at Morton Grove Public Library
Whether you're an expert or just looking for the basics, we offer a range of computer instruction to fit your specific needs. Take full advantage of the Library's resources by attending one or more of our workshops. We offer lecture/demonstration programs on a variety of topics, small group hands-on workshops to help you hone your computer skills, and self-directed instruction using online resources. (If you are unable to attend any of the regularly scheduled Library workshops, need special computer services or have special training needs, see our Alternative Computer Training page for other local computer training sources.) A full list of computer workshops is available in the Library's Event Calendar, where you can register online for workshops and other Library events. Morton Grove residents have priority for registration.
Hands-On Computer Lab Workshops Beginning Mouse Workshop Learn how to hold, move, and click a computer mouse. This 90-minute workshop is for people who have little or no experience using a mouse. This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers.
![]() Getting Started on the Web Designed for beginners, this 90-minute workshop will introduce the basics of navigating the Internet. Get a brief description of the Internet, learn about Web browsers, Web sites, and search engines. Learn how to input Web addresses (URLs) and how to move around Web pages. This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must have completed the Beginning Mouse workshop, or have experience in using a keyboard and mouse.
![]() Web the Next Step: Searching Mastered our Getting Started on the Web workshop or have equivalent experience and ready to move on? Then this 90-minute workshop is for you: learn about search engines, directories, phrase searching, evaluating sites, and more to find the information you need! This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must have completed the Getting Started on the Web workshop or have basic experience in using the Internet.
Setting up an E-Mail Account - Gmail (Google E-Mail) Using Google e-mail, Gmail, attendees will be able to register for an online e-mail account, compose, retrieve and reply to e-mail. This is a 90-minute interactive class. This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must be comfortable with using the Internet.

![]() Online Chat 101 Instant Messaging (IM) takes e-mail communication to the next level - real time communication with other people via the Internet. If you've been hesitant to try IM'ing, come to this guided, hands-on workshop, to see how it works. Participants will use Gmail chat to instantly send and receive messages to others in the workshop, and learn about instant messaging (chatting) privacy and safety issues. This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must be experienced with using a web-based e-mail account; must know the keyboard well enough to be comfortable typing messages.

In this hands-on workshop you will set up an account in LinkedIn, and learn how to upload a resume to your profile, connect with other professionals and navigate the site. This class is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must be experienced and comfortable with computer, keyboard and mouse.
![]() Web Wednesdays Have questions about Internet topics? Need help searching the Web? On the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm, a MGPL reference librarian starts each 90-minute Web Wednesdays workshop with information on a particular Internet topic, such as travel sites or health sites. The second part of the workshop is given to discussion and practice on other Web topics and problems. This class is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must have completed the Getting Started on the Web workshop or have the ability to navigate the Internet.
Teen Tech Workshops The Teen Librarian conducts monthly hands-on workshops for teens only on topics covering technology skills and applications of interest to teens. This class is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must have completed the Getting Started on the Web workshop or have the ability to navigate the Internet.
![]() You Can't Google This This 90-minute workshop will feature resources that are ONLY available through the Library - not searchable in Google. We will find a diagram to repair a car, a headline for a specific date, practice taking a test, read the current issue of a newspaper, and more. Please bring your MGPL library card with you. This class is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must be experienced and comfortable with using the Internet.
![]() You Can't Google This Either This 90-minute workshop is a continuation of the You Can't Google This workshop, featuring resources that are ONLY available through the Library. We will look for a census record, start learning a language, search for businesses in Morton Grove, locate information on a medical condition and more. Please bring your MGPL library card with you. Making Google Personal Have a Gmail account? Learn how to personalize your Google experience. We will design your iGoogle homepage, develop a calendar, set up RSS feeds, and more. This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must have a Gmail account and ability to navigate the Internet.

Participants will begin to fill out basic genealogical forms needed to start your genealogy research, and, time permitting, will start searching census records for family members. This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must be comfortable using the Internet. Please bring names, dates of births, marriages, and deaths for parents and gradparents.

Introduction to Microsoft Word 2007 This intensive introduction covers the basics of getting up and running with the world's most popular word processing program. Set up your page; create, format and illustrate your documents; print, proof and save. This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must be experienced and comfortable with computer, keyboard and mouse.

All participants must have a Google Gmail account and be experienced and comfortable with using the Internet.
Sharing Photos Online with Flickr How do you share your pictures with friends and family? Flickr is a free photo-sharing website that allows you to organize and show your photos online. In this workshop you will set-up a free account in Flickr, learn how to upload, tag and share your pictures, and define privacy levels that will determine who can view your pictures. This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. All participants must have an active Yahoo e-mail account and be experienced and comfortable with using the Internet. Sample photos for uploading will be provided, or bring your own photos on a flash drive.

Participants will set up an account; select privacy settings; post "tweets" and find people to follow. This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops.
