  Computer Classes and Workshops

Whether you're an expert or just looking for the basics, we offer a range of computer instruction to fit your specific needs. Take full advantage of the Library's resources by attending one or more of our workshops. We offer lecture/demonstration programs on a variety of topics, small group hands-on workshops to help you hone your computer skills, and self-directed instruction using online resources.

(If you are unable to attend any of the regularly scheduled Library workshops, need special computer services or have special training needs, see our Alternative Computer Training page for other local computer training sources.)

A full list of computer workshops is available in the Library's Event Calendar, where you can register online for workshops and other Library events. Morton Grove residents have priority for registration.

Hands-On Computer Lab Workshops

Beginning Mouse Workshop

Learn how to hold, move, and click a computer mouse. This 60-minute workshop is for people who have little or no experience using a mouse.

This class is a one-on-one tutorial using a Library laptop computer.

Getting Started on the Web, Part 1

This is the beginning session of a 3-part introduction to the Internet, with each session lasting 90 minutes. Attendees will get a basic understanding of the Internet and its related terminology, and learn how to enter web addresses (URLs) and navigate webpages.

This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must have completed the Beginning Mouse workshop, or have experience in using a keyboard and mouse.

Getting Started on the Web, Part 2

Part 2 of the Getting Started on the Web workshop. Learn how to navigate between webpages, evaluate information you find on the Web and do simple searches using Google.

This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must have completed the Getting Started on the Web, Part 1 workshop, or have basic experience in using the Internet.

Getting Started on the Web, Part 3

Part 3 of the Getting Started on the Web workshop. Learn how to use a variety of tools to improve and control searches and practice searching with the assistance of a librarian.

This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must have completed the Getting Started on the Web, Part 2 workshop, or have a strong understanding of searching the Web.

Setting up an E-Mail Account, Part 1

Using Google e-mail, Gmail, attendees will be able to register for a free Gmail account, learn how to compose and send e-mail messages, and manage their mail. This is a 90-minute interactive class.

This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must be comfortable with using the Internet.

Setting up an E-Mail Account, Part 2

Using Google e-mail, Gmail, attendees will learn how to organize their e-mails, create an address book and send attachments with an e-mail. This is a 90-minute interactive class.

This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must be have taken Setting up an E-Mail Account, Part 1 or have an active Gmail account with experience sending and receiving e-mail.

E-Mail Clinic

Improve your use of Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo! Mail! Learn how to send group e-mail messages while preserving the privacy of the recipients, link to a webpage or attach a photo or document. Get answers to your questions about web-based e-mail and spend some time practicing your skills in this hands-on workshop.

This class is a hands-on workshop using laptop computers. Participants must have, and be comfortable using, an active, web-based e-mail account.

Teen Tech Workshops

The Teen Librarian conducts monthly hands-on workshops for teens only on topics covering technology skills and applications of interest to teens.

This class is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must have completed the Getting Started on the Web workshop or have the ability to navigate the Internet.

You Can't Google This

This 90-minute workshop will feature resources that are ONLY available through the Library - not searchable in Google. Each You Can't Google This workshop is set up to cover a particular topic. Here are just some of the topics covered:

  • searching for health resources
  • finding a diagram to repair a car or a headline for a specific date
  • practice taking a test
  • reading the current issue of a newspaper
  • looking for a census record
  • searching for financial resources
  • starting to learn a language
  • searching for businesses in Morton Grove

Making Google Personal

Have a Gmail account? Learn how to personalize your Google experience. We will design your iGoogle homepage, develop a calendar, set up RSS feeds, and more.

This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must have a Gmail account and ability to navigate the Internet.

Creating Documents with Google Docs

Google Docs is a free web-based application that allows you to create word processing documents similar to Microsoft Word. Attendees will set up an account and learn how to create, edit and share documents.

This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must have an active e-mail account and be experienced and comfortable with using the Internet.

Getting Started Researching Your Family History

Have you ever wondered where your ancestors came from? Participants will begin to fill out basic genealogical forms needed to start your genealogy research, and, time permitting, will start searching census records for family members.

This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must be comfortable using the Internet. Please bring names, dates of births, marriages, and deaths for parents and gradparents.

Best Tools on the Internet for Genealogy Research

A follow up to the Getting Started Researching Your Family History workshop. Participants will be introduced to a number of resources available on the Internet and will continue researching their family history.

This intensive introduction covers the basics of getting up and running with the world's most popular word processing program. Set up your page; create, format and illustrate your documents; print, proof and save.

Advanced Word 2010

Think you know everything about Word? This intensive workshop will cover tables, charts, and clipart in greater details, plus tips for personal applications such as flyers and greeting cards.

This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. Participants must have taken the Do More with Microsoft Word 2010 workshop, or have a thorough understanding of Word 2010.

Mail Merge with Word 2010

Learn to create documents, letters, mailing lists, envelopes and labels in Mail Merge in Word 2010. Great for small business mailings and holiday letters!

This is a hands-on interactive workshop for new users of the popular spreadsheet program - Excel 2010. Learn fundamental spreadsheet skills: opening a new workbook, entering/editing data, and adding simple formatting.

Do you understand the fundamentals of Excel, but know there is still more to learn? A follow-up to Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2010, this hands-on workshop will further explore the popular spreadsheet program. It will cover performing calculations, sorting and filtering data, and custom formatting.

Use this desktop-publishing application to create custom flyers, newsletters and more. This class will cover using templates and the basics of formatting text and adding graphics.

Create Greeting Cards with Publisher 2010

Save money by using Microsoft Publish to create your own greeting cards! Learn how to make simple cards using free ClipArt images or your own digital pictures. Sample photos for uploading will be provided, or bring your own photos on a flash drive.

A librarian will guide participants in this hands-on, interactive workshop using Google Blogger to set up a free blog on a personal, business, or other special interest. The workshop also will cover posting blog updates, using links and photos, and managing blog comments.

Setting Up and Using LinkedIn: An Online Social Networking Tool for Professionals

Business professionals are using online social networks to connect with colleagues, look for career opportunities and research companies. In this hands-on workshop you will set up an account in LinkedIn, and learn how to upload a resume to your profile, connect with other professionals and navigate the site.

Learn how to access, select and download digital audiobooks and eBooks for free using your library card. This workshop will cover file formats and features of popular eReaders.

Sharing Photos Online with Flickr

How do you share your pictures with friends and family? Flickr is a free photo-sharing website that allows you to organize and show your photos online. In this workshop you will set-up a free account in Flickr, learn how to upload, tag and share your pictures, and define privacy levels that will determine who can view your pictures.

This 90-minute session is a hands-on computer lab workshop using Library laptops. All participants must have an active Yahoo e-mail account and be experienced and comfortable with using the Internet. Sample photos for uploading will be provided, or bring your own photos on a flash drive.

Been hearing a lot about Twitter? Learn the benefits of using this social networking site. Participants will set up an account; select privacy settings; post "tweets" and find people to follow.

Facebook isn't just for teens. This social networking tool is a fun and easy way to keep in touch with friends and family. In this workshop you will set up an account in Facebook, select privacy savings and learn how to find friends and update your status.

How much do you know about the privacy settings on your or your teen's Facebook account? In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn about your options for privacy settings and will have the opportunity to change them in your account. Parents and teens may register together.

Learn how to make free voice and video calls over the Internet using free software from Skype. Attendees will set up an account; learn how to make calls, and add contacts, among other tips.

Presented throughout the year, these events feature technology and computer-related presentations and workshops. These are lecture-demonstrations, not hands-on workshops. Coffee and light refreshments are provided.
