Business Resources on the Internet
Return to the Pathfinder Menu
Are you an investor managing a portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or commodities? Are you looking for a new job and trying to find information about a prospective company? Do you just enjoy tracking stocks and learning about emerging companies? The Internet has a tremendous variety of resources for anyone interested in business, finance, or commerce; the links on this page will help you get started.
This page was designed to give you an idea of the kinds of resources available on the World Wide Web, and includes sites that are currently offered at no cost, don't require registration, and have a reliable track record. The plethora of business magazines and newspapers has not been included on this page; if you are looking for a particular business journal, magazine, or newspaper, try the Morton Grove Public Library Magazine List , which features links to the Web sites of many publications.
There is generally a delay (usually 15 minutes) in the reporting of market activity such as stock quotes. At present, there is no "free" site that offers real-time quotes. If you have a need for real-time quotes, you will probably have to register with a service as part of your own Internet connection.
- Mutual Fund Companies
- This Web site is a good resource for information about mutual funds. The directory links you to the mutual fund's own Web site, which gives the potential investor a comprehensive, though not evaluative, picture of the fund. (www.seedship.com/mf/)
- Bonds Online
- Corporates, treasuries, municipals, and bond funds are all part of this Web site. Check out the Bond Map for municipal bonds currently available in each of the 50 states, along with a link to each state's State Treasury Web site. There is also a wealth of additional information about bond investing, including an FAQ (frequently asked questions) section, and, for the
bond novice, a glossary of the terminology used in the world of
bonds and funds. (www.bonds-online.com/)
- Business Wire
- If you want hourly business information, this is the Web site for you. It's a wire service, similar to Associated Press or Reuters, but with a business focus. In addition to the general business news updates, there are special updates for bioscience, high tech, retail, and corporate news. Just remember: the times listed for the updates are Eastern times and are, therefore, one hour ahead of us. (home.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/index.jsp)
- Chicago Board of Trade
- Learn about the fascinating world of commodities and futures. The CBOT now has closing prices for futures, options, futures spreads, and options spreads. Look here for an abundance of information about the agricultural markets, along with press releases and news bulletins that concern the commodities investor. (www.cbot.com/)
- CME: Chicago Mercantile Exchange
- Find daily settlement prices on cattle, hogs, pork bellies, lumber, currencies, and stock indices. Read contract specifications on Merc commodities. (www.cme.com/)
- Company News
- PR Newswire has created this user-friendly Web site of press releases from participating companies with a three-year archive. The key here is "participating," for not all companies submit their press releases to PR Newswire, but hundreds do. Within the alphabetical listing you will also find a special notation if there has been a press release in the past 24 hours. (www.prnewswire.com/cnoc/cnoc.html)
- (Ticker) Symbol Lookup
- Many Web sites that offer stock quotes require you to use the ticker symbol. Unless you are absolutely certain about the ticker symbol, you might want to use this Yahoo! Web site first to find and verify the ticker symbols. (finance.yahoo.com/l)
- (Yahoo's) Stock Exchanges
- Yahoo provides this list of links to worldwide stock exchanges. Scroll down the first screen to find the alphabetical list. (dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/
