Hautzig, Deborah.

During World War II, when she was eleven years old, the author and her family were arrested in Poland by the Russians as political enemies and exiled to Siberia. She recounts here the trials of the following five years spent on the harsh Asian steppe.

Jiang, Ji Li
Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution. 1996. J 951.056
This fascinating book details the author's experiences as a teenager during the Cultural Revolution in China. Though she tries to be a devoted follower of Chairman Mao, Jiang and her family are subjected to many indignities because her grandfather was once a landlord.

The author describes her battle against polio when she was thirteen and her efforts to overcome its debilitating effects.

This remarkable book tells the story of Hana Brady, a girl killed at Auschwitz, and how her suitcase,which arrived at a children's Holocaust education center in Tokyo, Japan, in 2000, came to be a part of the Tokyo Holocaust Education Resource Center. In this suspenseful and amazing tale, Fumiko, the center's curator, searches for clues to young Hana and her family, whose happy life in a small Czech town came to an end with the invasion of the Nazis. A CD recording of a radio program based on the book is included.

Murphy, Jim.

A vertible cinematic account of the catastrophe that decimated much of Chicago in 1871, forcing more than 100,000 people from their homes. Jim Murphy tells the story through the eyes of several survivors. These characters serve as dramatic focal points as the fire sweeps across the city, their stories illuminated by fascinating archival photos and maps outlining the spread of fire. 1996 Newbery Honor Book.

Biography of the African princess saved from execution and taken to England where Queen Victoria oversaw her upbringing and where she lived for a time before marrying an African missionary.

Walter Dean Myers is an award-winning writer of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for young people. He has received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for his contribution to young adult literature and is a five time winner of the Coretta Scott King Award.

The son of a North Carolina sharecropper recalls the hard times faced by his family and other African Americans in the first half of the twentieth century and the changes that the civil rights movement helped bring about.
