Exhibits and Display Policy
The Morton Grove Public Library invites artists and groups to share their artistic and educational materials with the community. The Library offers free exhibit space for periods of one month:
- two walls with a Walker Hanging System and gallery lighting in the Baxter Room (auditorium)
- a large, locked glass display case in the Lincoln Avenue entry
- two large, glass exhibit cases in the Youth Services Department
Exhibits should:
- Contribute positively to the Library's environment
- Highlight, whenever possible, the Library's collection
- Promote resources and services of the Library
- Enrich the life of the Morton Grove community
- Be a means of strengthening partnerships between the Library and the community.
Exhibits/displays of a polemic or discriminatory nature will be refused. If elements of a display are judged inappropriate by members of the Library Board and/or the Library Director, the sponsoring individual will be required to remove those elements from the premises immediately.
Guidelines:
- Acceptance of an exhibit for the Baxter Room or Lincoln Ave. Entry will be determined by the Coordinator of Programming and Public Relations, or for Youth Services exhibits, by the Head of Youth Services. Residency in Morton Grove is not a requirement for exhibiting.
- Exhibits will normally be limited to a one-month period with dates for installation and removal established in advance.
- Works which are for sale may be purchased in accordance with individual arrangements with the artists. Library staff do not participate in any of the purchase arrangements. Artists are encouraged to post a statement about their work but price tags may not be affixed to the works exhibited or displayed in the auditorium. A price list with the artist's name and phone number will be kept at the Check-out Desk , Reference Services Desk, and/or Youth Services Desk for consultation by potential purchasers,
- Descriptive lists of works must be submitted to the Administrative Office with monetary value/price of each item.
- Transporting, unloading, hanging, and arrangement of exhibits shall be the responsibility of the artist under the supervision of the Library staff. If the artist needs assistance in this effort, it is his/her responsibility to bring someone to assist him/her.
- The Library does not have space for storage of the property of exhibitors in the Library building; therefore, artists are asked to deliver and pick up artwork according to the dates established in advance.
- Insurance covering the value of the exhibit will be the responsibility of the displaying artists. Prior to the display of the items, the artist/owner will sign a disclaimer releasing the Library from all responsibility. See attached Display Agreement.
Installation and Removal of Exhibits
The responsibility for design and placement of all displays rests with the owner(s) of the displayed items. Likewise, the responsibility for the installation and dismantling of an exhibit/display rests with the individual owner(s) of the material. Both installation and dismantling should conform to the exhibit dates approved in advance.
- Baxter Room (auditorium)
- Items displayed in the Baxter Room must use the Walker Hanging System. Long metal hooks in six different lengths are hung from metal tracks along both side walls, and adjustable cams can be positioned at the desired height for hanging of the work. Paintings, photographs, and other artwork should be framed with picture wire firmly positioned for hanging the work from the cams. No adhesives, nails, or other hardware may be affixed to the walls or other surfaces.
- Gallery lighting is mounted on both sides of the Baxter Room ceiling, with the canisters directed toward the walls for illumination of artwork. Exhibitors may submit a biographical statement, which will be posted by the Library in an acrylic frame.
- Display Cases
- Lincoln Avenue Entry: the dimensions of the illuminated, locked display case are: approximately 6 feet long x 4 feet tall x 14 inches deep. The back wall is corkboard so that pins and pushpins can be used to post labels, signage, and lightweight items. There are two pairs of shelf racks for adjustable acrylic and glass shelving. A row of hooks in the ceiling of the case can be used to suspend lightweight items.
- Youth Services:
- Flat Case: 5 feet long x 30 inches wide x 8 inches deep
- Freestanding, illuminated glass case: 6 feet wide x 2.5 feet tall x 20 inches deep
Security
Items on display in the Library will be given the same security as the Library collection and equipment; the glass display cases are locked, but irreplaceable items or items of great value should not be included in the display.
Responsibility
The responsibility for any damage to Library property caused by the installation, display, or dismantling of an exhibit rests with the sponsoring group or individual. The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of any items placed on exhibit, although it takes reasonable precautions to provide security. Exhibitors must sign the Exhibit - Display Agreement Form and file a price/valuation list with the Administrative Office upon installation of a private exhibit or display.
Publicity
Art exhibits displayed in the Baxter Room and Lincoln Avenue entry are publicized in Library publications such as the newsletter, Books & Beyond; online and print calendars; and press releases submitted to local newspapers.
