Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Youth Services Sound Recordings
The audiocassette and compact disc collection includes music, spoken and miscellaneous recordings. The most popular items are by Raffi, MisterRogers, Sesame Street, Ella Jenkins, and a few others. In the folk tales section, the Youth Services Department has a very extensive collection of Korean-English bilingual audiocassettes with accompanying books, and many Korean language materials. Cassettes which come with read-along books are hung in plastic bags and classified as Multi-Media Kits.
Influencing Factors
Selection is heavily influenced by patron interest and demand. Children's folk songs and dances are perennial favorites, along with certain established children's performers.
Selection Plan
Selection is done primarily from publishers' catalogs, such as Educational Record and Tape, Hotho, Kimbo, Listening Library and Caedmon. School Library Journal is used for selection, since it now has extensive audiovisual reviews for children's materials.
Retention & Weeding
Audiocassettes and compact discs are retained in the collection as long as condition and usage indicate.
Development Plan
The popularity of compact discs indicates that more titles in this format should be purchased and added to the collection in the Youth Services Department. A title will be purchased in both audiocassette and in compact disc if it is very popular and in high demand. Since children's materials are becoming more difficult to find in audiocassette format, a greater percentage of future purchases will be designated for compact discs.
