Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Youth Services Periodicals
The periodical collection in the Youth Services Department contains over 40 titles. Materials to support the recreational, informational, and educational needs of children through grade six are included. Popular titles include Ranger Rick, National Geographic World, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, and Cricket.
Influencing Factors
The Library acquires and maintains a periodical collection to serve the informational, educational and recreational needs of the community. Patrons' demands for current information are frequently met by the periodical holdings.
Selection Plan
The standard selection tools are used in choosing magazines for children. Titles which are well-reviewed are considered for addition to the collection. Patron suggestions are also considered when making selection decisions.
Retention & Weeding
Back issues of all magazines are kept for five years. Plays and Pack-O-Fun are kept indefinitely. When adults request seasonal materials, such as plays for Washington's Birthday, and seasonal crafts, they usually want copies for as many years of that month's magazine as possible. Review journals of children's literature are currently retained indefinitely: School Library Journal, Hornbook, The Bulletin of the Center for Childrens Books, and the children's section of Kirkus. This current policy should be evaluated based on actual use figures and revision made, if so indicated. The retention schedule for all children's magazine should be regularly reviewed to be responsive to space needs and usage statistics.
Development Plan
New children's magazines should be added in response to patron interest and demand. The current periodicals are displayed on open shelves. Consideration will be given to the relocation of the back issues to shelving more accessible by patrons.
