Youth Services Paperbacks
The Paperback collection contains primarily fiction titles by a wide variety of authors for children in grades 2-6. Popular series such as Sweet Valley Twins, Baby-Sitters Club, Sleep-Over Friends, and Choose Your Own Adventure are kept in multiple copies. These books have large followings, with children usually requesting the books by number, without even knowing the title. A large percentage of the paperback circulation can be accounted for by these paperback series.
Influencing Factors
Demand created by word-of-mouth influences the purchasing of paperbacks to a large degree. In addition, many children who would feel embarrassed to be seen with a hard-cover book, have no such compunction towards a paperback title because of its inconspicuous nature. Convenience and ease of handling are two of the reasons for the paperbacks' continuing popularity.
Selection Plan
In addition to the standard selection tools, the Youth Services Department has a monthly standing order for juvenile paperback series with Baker and Taylor. This plan provides a steady supply of new paperback series' titles. Additional copies of titles likely to be in great demand are ordered after the initial copy is received. Four to eight copies of each title in these series are kept. Titles not appropriate to the scope of the juvenile collection are returned to B&T for credit.
Retention & Weeding
Weeding occurs naturally, as these books, by their impermanent nature, fall apart through heavy use. Replacements are ordered, as needed, to maintain the desired number of copies of each title until they are no longer in print or no longer in demand.
