Youth Services Department Overview
The Morton Grove Public Library Youth Services Department serves a primary population of Morton Grove residents from pre-school through grade six and their adult caregivers. It also serves teachers who work in Morton Grove schools, as well as teachers who are Morton Grove residents but work in other communities. The secondary service group includes children from surrounding communities who take part in MGPL classes and activities. According to the 2000 Census, of the Morton Grove population of 22,451, there are approximately 4110 who are 14 years old or younger. Of the Library's registered borrowers, approximately 1,500 have children's cards. MGPL Youth Services Department has users from many ethnic backgrounds: Koreans, Filippinos, South Asians, Hispanics, Russians, and other eastern Europeans.
The purpose of the collection is to serve the community in its diverse informational and recreational pursuits. The staff provides the primary link between library resources and the public through one on-one contact at the service desks and through programming for larger groups. Programs, such as story times, creative writing, school visits and reading clubs introduce children to recreational reading.
The Youth Services Department has one service desk which is staffed by two full-time Librarians and nine part-time Information Assistants, 5.2 FTE. A full-time Technical Services Assistant and two part-time shelvers provide additional support staff for this department.
The Youth Services Department's collection of materials in July 2005 includes 52,800 items. The scope of the collection includes materials for children from pre-school through grade six. The audiovisual collection, currently totalling 3,719 items, includes cassettes, compact discs, audiobooks, videocassettes, DVDs, and multi-media kits. The Youth Services Department subscribes to approximately 35 periodicals of interest to children and their caregivers.
The Youth Services Department has a long-standing commitment to providing the materials, services, and programs that its patrons want. Its most important long-term goal is to work with parents to develop their children's reading, listening and thinking skills.
