Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Youth Services Non-fiction
The nonfiction collection consists of materials to meet the informational, educational, and recreational reading needs of children with third to sixth grade reading levels. A special emphasis is the collection of folk and fairy tales; many texts are in bilingual format, with accompanying audiocassettes.
Influencing Factors
Students use the non-fiction collection to complete assignments. Some topics such as explorers, the original 13 colonies and the states, ancient cultures, and U.S. presidents are recurring assignments. Children also use the collection for recreational reading. Favorite topics are sports teams and players, dinosaurs, pets, riddles and jokes, magic, and phenomena such as UFO's and Bigfoot. Animal books are often used for school assignments in addition to meeting information needs throughout the year.
Selection Plan
Review sources include the standard selection tools for children's materials: School Library Journal, Booklist, Kirkus, Horn Book, Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, Science Books and Films, etc. In addition, publishers' catalogs are regularly consulted; this is essential in order to obtain materials that fulfill subject needs but that do not get reviewed in the selection journals.
Retention & Weeding
Books are withdrawn due to damage, loss, general interest level as evidenced by circulation figures, or content relevancy and currency.
Development Plan
The weeding of worn materials and replacement with new editions/titles in all subject areas will be the primary focus. . The biography section in particular needs updating with new titles, fresher material, and more current personalities.
