Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Youth Services Fiction
The Fiction collection is comprised of titles meeting the recreational and educational needs of students with third through sixth grade reading levels. Books include modern selections in such areas as mystery, sports, science fiction, adventure, humor, historical fiction, and novels about the problems of contemporary boys and girls. Also included in this collection are classics such as books by Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, and Jules Verne. Multiple copies of Newbery Award winners, and a growing collection of large-print novels are shelved separately.
The books are generally a step above easy readers in difficulty and length. The books may have illustrations, but the concepts, style, and treatment of the text are the significant parts. These books cover a wide range of subjects, themes, life situations, and developmental tasks. A variety of characters, settings, and writing styles are represented with difficulty ranging from simple stories to books for a sophisticated reader with a large vocabulary, wide literary knowledge, and high reading skills.
Influencing Factors
The Youth Services Department keeps current lists of novels in various categories. These lists help to broaden the horizons of chidren who read books in series or books by only one or two favorite authors. These lists introduce children to authors beyond the few in the best seller ranks. Example of such lists include, "Girls, if you have read all of Judy Blume's books, here are some books by other authors that you might also enjoy," and, "If You Enjoyed 'The Little House on the Prairie' series, you might also enjoy. . . " Although the department makes every effort to keep up with current trends, it feels a responsibility to introduce children to the finest, most well-reviewed children's literature. Multiple copies of award-winning titles are acquired regularly to satisfy the demand of the general reader as well as classroom assignments.
Selection Plan
Using the standard reviewing tools, one copy of most titles is purchased. However, where demand is apt to be great, three copies of each title are purchased. These may then be supplemented by paperback copies. In the case of perennial favorites, such as the "Little House" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, from six to eight copies of each title are kept. Favorite standards such as Little Women and Peter Pan are purchased in various editions to provide a variety of treatments.
Retention & Weeding
Retention is based on use and condition of the material; titles with multiple copies should be checked for usage and duplicate copies withdrawn as demand decreases. Titles are replaced and supplemented as needed based on demand.
Development Plan
The Fiction collection will be maintained at the current level to meet patron interest and demand. A current focus is on supplying multiple copies to meet a demonstrated demand for award-winning literature for children.
