Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Videocassettes/DVDs
The video collection contains adult and juvenile feature titles and adult informational videos in VHS and DVD format. The collection consists of a varied selection of feature films, including current high interest, old classics, and foreign films. Informational titles include such popular subjects as travel, sports, exercise, parenting, cooking, business, language, documentaries, arts, hobbies, and home repair. Many PBS titles are purchased. Children's videos/DVDs include titles from several popular series, such as Faerie Tale Theater and Disney series. Most of the collection is currently for home use only, but the Library may puchase some public performance videos when the price is within the Library's budget. (Videos for home use are restricted to individual or family viewing. Public performance videos are those for which the Library has purchased the rights for group viewing, for either in-library programs or for organizations' use with their members.)
Influencing Factors
The video/DVD collection exists to serve the general informational, educational, and recreational needs of the Library community. Numerous local video rental stores supply recent releases of the most popular films in greater quantity than the Library. Appropriateness and expected long-term use and value to the collection are deciding factors in the selection of adult and children's videos. Closed-captioned films are purchased whenever available to meet the Library's commitment to serve the hearing-impaired. Patron requests for specific videos/DVDs will be considered and purchased if the film is appropriate to the collection for the long term. Changing technology is always a factor to be considered in the long range development of the collection.
Selection Plan
In addition to the standard selection tools, reviewing sources such as Video Review, Video Librarian, New York Times and other newspaper/journal reviews, are regularly consulted. Publishers' catalogs (Major Video Concepts, B&T Video Alert, Facets, Home Vision, etc.), ads, and patron title requests are also used to identify current high-interest releases and nonfiction films suitable for purchase. Preference is given to the purchase of new titles rather than replacements, but available titles in high demand may be replaced. Most videocassettes are replacement candidates after 150 circulations. Multiple copies may be considered for high-interest feature films only.
Retention & Weeding
The video/DVD collection is constantly growing. Weeding has been done, based on circulation counts and condition of the tape/DVD. Videos/DVDs with little or no circulation and videocassettes which circulated more than 150 times are regularly considered for withdrawal from the collection to make room for new titles. High-interest feature films may be replaced with new copies of the title, depending upon circulation history and community interest. Weeding is an on-going process.
Development Plan
The video/DVD collection continues to grow in response to community demand and interest. The emphasis will be on acquiring high-interest feature films and quality entertainment programs for children. The ultimate size of the collection will be determined by long-range decisions affecting shelving and storage options.
