Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Popular Sound Recordings
The popular sound recording collection includes CDs covering all varieties of music that do not fall into the classical category. This includes, but is not limited to, pop, R&B, country, jazz, reggae, world, new age, show tunes, etc.
Influencing Factors
Budget and demand dictate a strong collection of current popular mainstream recordings. Library patrons have embraced the CD technology and consequently demand is high for CDs reflecting the musical interests and pursuits of community residents and Library users.
Selection Plan
Selection tools include Billboard, Stereo Review, Chicago Tribune, and often many of the standard selection tools as well.
Retention & Weeding
Weeding should still be an on going process with condition and circulation statistics dictating whether or not to withdraw a title. Materials that are in poor or damaged condition are evaluated and either removed from circulation, or replaced.
Development Plan
The development goal for this collection is to have a balanced and representative collection of all types/formats of popular music. The collection is not to be a comprehensive one. Emphasis will continue to be on the CD format. However, due to changing technology in the audio field, the library must be alert and react to changes in format.
