Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Telephone Books
The phone book collection includes current directories covering the Chicago metropolitan area, Champaign-Urbana and Springfield, Illinois. The library will endeavor to have a representative collection of all Illinois directories serving area codes 312, 630, 708, 773, and 847.
Influencing Factors
The telephone book collection has been a heavily used resource in most public libraries and the Morton Grove Public Library is no exception. Although paper copies of telephone directories are still available, the rising cost of both the directories and the shipping charges must be considered a significant factor when choosing the number of directories and the geographic range to be covered.
Selection Plan
All telephone books are on standing order with SBC. Access to national published business and residential telephone numbers is available through remote access to MGPL cardholders and to all patron in-house from the online subscription database, RerenceUSA.
Retention & Weeding
Print directories are discarded when new edition arrives. Once a year, all annual directories over two years old are withdrawn.
Development Plan
As of 2003, online telephone directories, both free and fee-based, are readily available on the Internet. The Morton Grove Public Library will continue to provide access to a subscription online directory to anyone in the Library and remotely to MGPL cardholders. Print telephone directories will remain in the collection as long as patron usage indicates.
