Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Paperbacks
The paperback collection is provided for readers who want to select from among current popular fiction and non-fiction and also older titles of popular authors. Established as a browsing collection, it includes mysteries, general romances, series romances, standard fiction, adventure, westerns, science fiction, self-help guides, health, celebrity biographies, best sellers, and other types of popular reading. With the exception of the romances, which are only entered in the Circulation system, all paperbacks are fully cataloged and accessible through the online catalog.
Influencing Factors
The paperback collection is a stand-alone collection, not an attempt to complement the general collection of the Morton Grove Public Library, although current holdings may impact selection of certain titles. The collection should be built with attention to popularity of the authors, titles, and/or subjects, and to satisfying the demand for current publications while maintaining a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and genre titles.
Selection Plan
Most of the materials purchased are selected on a monthly basis from Ingram's catalog of mass market paperbacks. Donations of paperbacks are monitored for those in like-new condition, with preference given to romance fiction and mysteries. Donations are the primary source for series romance titles. Since it is equally important to maintain a collection that is new-looking and broad-based in popular reading, consideration of adding a donated title to the collection should not be based on whether the title has previously been in the collection. A steady turnover will create a browsing collection attractive to old and new readers alike.
Retention & Weeding
Paperbacks are retained only as long as they are in good condition and circulating. To keep the collection fresh and current, worn or damaged titles are removed from the collection on a monthly basis as new titles are added or as the need arises. Physical condition and/or circulation statistics are the basis for all decisions on retention in the collection.
