Adult Department Overview
The Morton Grove Public Library Adult Services Department serves a primary population of Morton Grove residents over the age of 12. However, the secondary service group includes adults from many surrounding communities as well as children.
In July 2005, the Adult collection includes 82,165 items; 9,344 are audiovisual materials, including audiobooks, audiocassettes, compact discs, and videos/DVDs; approximately 400 periodical titles, with backfiles and current subscriptions available to support the basic informational needs of the Library's clientele.
Popular areas emphasized by MGPL are popular fiction, mysteries, computer books, travel books, job search books, and books and audiovisual materials on learning English to help the new immigrants in the community. Besides the traditional book format, the Adult Department has acquired audiobook cassettes, audobook CDs, compact discs, and videocassettes/DVDs in increasing numbers to satisfy heavy patron demand. An increasing focus on the needs of Morton Grove's varied ethnic population is evidenced by the purchase of extensive materials in the Korean language in FY90 and in the East Asian languages in FY93 with grant monies, and regular annual purchases of materials in languages of interest to Library patrons.
The Adult Services Department has one information service desk: Reference Services, which is staffed by 6.2 FTE professional staff; in addition, the Circulation Desk provides service to all Library patrons with an approximate staff of 4 FTEs. These figures indicate the number of staff hours used to provide the current level of public service in mid-2003.
Approved by the Morton Grove Public Library Board of Trustees, May 14, 1998; statistics revised 8/05.
