Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Large Type Books
The large type collection is primarily a duplication of titles already in the Library in standard type. Classic literature, popular and genre fiction - including mystery, romance, adventure, and some Western titles - make up the fiction collection. The majority of nonfiction books consists of biographies, travel memoirs, self-help, medical, humor, and assorted other popular works.
Influencing Factors
Weekly library visits to Bethany Terrace, a Morton Grove nursing home, and the large percentage of Morton Grove residents who are senior citizens, influence the purchase patterns reflected in this collection.
Selection Plan
Selection is primarily done through a standing order plan with Thorndike (twelve titles quarterly). Other titles, usually best sellers, are ordered from Baker and Taylor from reviews of large type materials in the standard reviewing/selecting tools.
Retention & Weeding
Due to space consideratons, the collection must be weeded very heavily each year. Books in poor condition are the first to be considered for withdrawal; fiction and nonfiction titles in good condition but no longer circulating are also prime candidates for withdrawal from the collection.
Development Plan
Because large type books are seldom reprinted, emphasis should be on purchasing the most desirable titles soon after publication. New works need to be purchased to keep up with popular demand and to maintain a balance in the collection. Demand may necessitate more titles in large type than current shelf space allows. Attention should be given to expanding the shelf space for this collection in anticipation of modest growth in the large type collection. Little weeding can be done currently except for titles in poor condition.
