Local History Materials

This collection consists of items in print, on audiocassette, and on videocassette related to the local history of the Village of Morton Grove, which is part of both Niles Township and Maine Township in Cook County, Illinois.

The most unique contribution to this history is the collection of 39 oral history interviews conducted in the 1980s with longtime Morton Grove residents and descendants of the early settlers of the community. This project was conducted jointly with the Morton Grove Historical Society. The interviews are currently preserved on audiocassettes and have been transcribed for use by historical researchers and interested patrons. Plans are in development for the digitization of these oral histories so that they can be viewed and/or heard through links on the Library's Website.

The most comprehensive histories of the Village of Morton Grove are found in two books published in conjunction with significant anniversaries of the founding of the Village: Morton Grove Diamond Jubilee: 1895-1970 and Morton Grove, Illinois, 1895-1995: Centennial Anniversary. Multiple copies of both books are maintained in the Library's collections. Library staff members are indexing these books for the benefit of researchers and interested patrons.

Influencing Factors

Unique materials of historical value concerning the Morton Grove Public Library, the Village of Morton Grove and its organizations, schools, businesses, and residents are retained in the Library's reference and circulating collections.

Selection Plan

Published materials in all formats which contain significant information about the Village of Morton Grove or its citizens, past and present, should be actively sought for inclusion in the collection. Minutes, budgets, financial reports and other important publications from municipal organizations should be solicited and copies added to the collection on a continuing basis. In addition to a current print collection of the local newspapers, a subscription to the electronic version of the Morton Grove Champion was added to the Library's collection of online databases in 2004.

Retention & Weeding

Materials pertaining strictly to current Morton Grove government, schools, and organizations will be retained as long-term relevance and space needs indicate. To provide archival access to the local newspapers, a subscription to the Morton Grove Champion is sent to the Illinois State Historical Library for microfilming.

Development Plan

The online Obituary File, compiled from records in past editions of local newspapers, is an ongoing service, maintained by the Reference staff. Online equivalents of items pertaining to Morton Grove, Niles Township, and Maine Township, their government, schools, and organizations, will be added to the Library's Web site as soon as they become available. The Library will pursue digitization projects to maximize access to retained materials of local interest as funds are allocated to support these services.

Approved by the Morton Grove Public Library Board of Trustees, September 14, 2006
