Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Government Documents
A dramatic shift, at both the federal and state levels, to disseminating documents via electronic delivery or database and not in print form, has radically impacted how the Morton Grove Public Library selects and purchases government documents.
Influencing Factors
Goverment information sources provide the librarian and the patron with access to the function and product of various agencies, bureaus, and other governmental systems. The library's selection of print materials is heavily influenced by several factors: the location of the IRAD (Illinois Record Archives Depository) at Northeastern Illinois University, the location of NARA (National Archives Records Administration) in Chicago, complete or partial depositories of federal and state documents at several academic and large public libraries, and the proliferation of Web sites on the Internet.
Selection Plan
Government information sources are selected according to the guidelines for selection established for the WWW sources and the Reference Collection. Some of the tools used to select resources at the federal level are the Superintendent of Documents Home Page on the U.S. Government Printing Office Web Site and the GPO Catalog available on FirstSearch. State resources are chosen based on the monthly publication, Illinois Documents, and the State of Illinois Web Site. Local (i.e. Morton Grove, Niles/Maine Township, or Cook County) resources are quite often given to the library at little or no cost, therefore each donation will be considered on an individual basis, using the selection criteria established for the pertinent area of the collection.
Retention & Weeding
Again, the significance of electronic information sources will be felt in this area of the collection. The majority of print resources may be considered permanent additions to the Reference or Local History Collections. Any weeding that is done will be based on continued timeliness, relevancy, and condition of the material. The Reference Coordinator will continually reevaluate the status of print information sources.
Development Plan
Information provided by various governmental entities is used primarily in the Referencec collection. The library will continue to choose government information sources, in print form, as long as they prove to be the most current, accurate source available. The library will also continue to select, using the established guidelines for selections, appropriate Internet Web sites to be added to the library's online presence, the Morton Grove Webrary.
