Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Classical Sound Recordings
The classical sound recording collection includes CDs covering the vocal and instrumental musical spectrum from baroque to ultramodern. In addition, there is a growing collection of opera recordings. Music ranges from performances by soloists through full symphonic performances.
Influencing Factors
Because of a wide variety of users, the collection should be varied and contain music that appeals to all tastes. The operas of the current Lyric season are a continuing interest of many patrons.
Selection Plan
Selection sources include Billboard, Stereo Review, CD One Stop Monthly Catalog, and standard magazines and newspapers. Special publishers catalogs or catalogs from record distributors such as Rose Records are also consulted. Unique and unusual music heard on WFMT radio station, as well as music played at live concerts, is also considered as part of the selection plan.
Retention & Weeding
Since the CD collection is fairly current, weeding should generally be limited to damaged recordings. Materials that are in poor or damaged condition are evaluated and either removed from circulation, or replaced. As the collection continues to grow, earlier performances might be replaced by CDs with higher ratings or newer technology.
