Collection Development and Materials Selection Policy
Circulating CD-ROMs
The Library purchases interactive multimedia CD-ROM software on a variety of topics for children, appealing to a broad range of interests, and on limited topics for adults. In 2002, the growing number of children's CD-ROM titles forced the separation of titles into adult and children's collections. In 2002, all children's CD-ROMs were moved to the Youth Services Department. CD-ROMs purchased for the Adult Collection are incorporated into the appropriate Dewey class number and shelved with the regular book collection. Criteria for selection for CD-ROMs purchased for either Departments include materials that are informational, educational, and creative in nature. Recreational materials that meet the above criteria for selection are also purchased. Titles which operate on both PCs and Macintoshes are purchased whenever available.
Influencing Factors
The CD-ROM collection exists to serve the general informational, educational, and creative needs of the Library community. Appropriateness and expected long-term use and value to the collection are deciding factors in the selection of interactive multi-media CD-ROMS. Patron requests for specific CD-ROMs will be considered and purchased if the title is appropriate to the collection on a long term basis. Changing technology is always a factor to be considered in the long range development of the collection.
Selection Plan
Standard library reviewing journals, such as Library Journal and Publisher's Weekly are useful selection tools for multimedia titles with professional reviews. Lists and catalogs provided by Baker & Taylor, Ingram, and Crimson Software, other software and multimedia catalogs, and patron requests are used to identify current high-interest releases suitable for purchase.
Retention & Weeding
CD-ROMs, damaged or lost from the collection, will be withdrawn as needed and replaced, if appropriate to the changing needs of the collection. Patrons responsible for damage to CD-ROM material will be held responsible for the full replacement cost of the title. The initial loan periods for CD-ROM titles are two-weeks. Loan periods and reserve status decisions will be based on patron interest level and "turnover" considerations. Changing technology is also a factor to be considered in retention of titles and weeding of the collection.
Development Plan
The circulating CD-ROM collection continues to grow in response to community demand and interest. The emphasis is on acquiring high-interest titles and quality educational or "edutainment" programs for children. The ultimate size of the collection will be determined by long-range decisions concerning allocated funds, shelving and storage options.
