SUGGESTIONS FROM THE LISTSERV
The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists         by Gideon Defoe- and subsequent volumes, adventuring with Ahab / Communists /Napoleon. Absurdist humor; worth trying any one of them but the jokes wear thin after a while.

Pirates of Pensacola         Keith Thomson 2005

Pirates of the Levant         Arturo Perez-Reverte 2010

The Pirate Devlin         Mark Keating 2010

The Pirate King         Laurie R. King 2011

The pyrates         Fraser, George MacDonald, 1925-2008. New York : Knopf : Distributed by Random House,1984 Funny title by the Flashman author; my favorite.

Fast ships, black sails         Novik, Naomi; VanderMeer, Ann; VanderMeer, Jeff._Portland, Or. : Night Shade ; London : Diamond [distributor],_2008_Contents: A fascination with pirates / Ann & Jeff VanderMeer --Boojum / Elizabeth Bear & Sarah Monette -- Castor on troubled waters /Rhys Hughes -- I begyn as I mean to go on / Kage Baker -- Avast, abaft!/ Howard Waldrop -- Elegy to Gabrielle, patron saint of healers, whores, and righteous thieves / Kelly Barnhill -- Skillet and saber / Justin Howe -- Nymph's child / Carrie Vaughn -- 68* 07' 15" N, 31* 36' 44" W /_Conrad Williams -- Ironface / Michael Moorcock -- Pirate solutions /Katherine Sparrow -- We sleep on a thousand waves beneath the stars /_Brendan Connell -- Voyage of the iguana / Steve Aylett -- Pirates of the Suara Sea / David Freer & Eric Flint -- Cold day in hell / Paul_Battieger -- Adventures of Captain Black Heart Wentworth / Rachel Swirsky -- Araminta, or, the wreck of the Amphidrake / Naomi Novik --Whale below / Jayme Lynn Blaschke -- Beyond the sea gate of the scholar - Pirates of Sarskoe / Garth Nix.
SBN: 9781597800945 (pbk.); 1597800945 (pbk.)

An anthology of original stories featuring a science fiction and fantasy romp through pirate-infested seas. The settings of these stories vary from the traditional 17th century Caribbean glory years of piracy to the frozen seas off colonial Boston to unnamed far future oceans to deep space itself. (what it says; haven't read this one yet)

Or else my lady keeps the key         Baker, Kage. Burton, Mich. : Subterranean Press, 2008 Can't remember if this is an expanded version of her story in the Fast Ships, Black Sails anthology or not, but I enjoyed it.

Capt. Hook: The Adventures of a Notorious Youth         James Hart and the classic that inspired it: Peter Pan by JM Barrie Set to Sea by Drew Weing Graphic novel; an all ages read with lots of pirates in it.

Grania         Morgan Llywelyn Fictional but based on the life of Grace O'Malley , who was involved in both legitimate trade and piracy.

Bloody Jack         L.A. Meyer. Wonderful series about a runaway girl, Mary "Jacky" Faber, disguising herself as a boy and ending up on both naval and pirate ships. The series continues with Curse of the Blue Tattoo, Under the Jolly Roger, In the Belly of the Bloodhound, Mississippi Jack, My Bonny Light Horseman, Rapture of the Deep, The Wake of the Lorelei Lee, and The Mark of the Golden Dragon. For grades 6-8.

Moonfleet        J. Meade Faulkner Marginal; seaside smugglers and thieves, but it "feels" piratey to me. Moonfleet

Dr Syn on the High Seas         Russell Thorndike A great blood and thunder adventure, but some racist bits involving a rival Black pirate may jar readers). The other Dr Syn novels, like Moonfleet, largely involve smuggling and dirty work on the shore, but this one has a significant amount of full scale pirateyness.

Beauty Queens         Libba Bray

There are also a few novels featuring Anne Bonny (Bonney), a female 18th century pirate.
