I have been asked by another staff member to help him find a book his
mother had heard about. So does that make this third or fourth hand
info? This is what we know

Stories about prostitutes
Title something like "Grand Horizontal Tales"
Probably new
Don't know if it is fiction or nonfiction.

It's not new, but Cornelia Otis Skinner had a title that might be it:

Author Skinner, Cornelia Otis, 1901-
Title Elegant wits and grand horizontals; a sparkling panorama of "la
belle epoque," its gilded society, irrepressible wits and splendid courtesans.
Published Boston, Houghton Mifflin, 1962.
Description 262 p. illus. 23 cm.

I believe the title of the British edition of this was just GRAND
HORIZONTALS.

Skinner is perhaps best remembered for her early autobiographical
humor title, OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY. (By me, anyway.)
