Could it be Ray Bradbury's All Summer in a Day? And in this story, children didn't here
from the elders but rather from a fellow student whom they treated cruelly.

In the opposite vein is Nightfall, where a planet has several suns. They
all set every few hundred years and civilization is destroyed in the ensuing
panic and riots. A few scientists usually find a place to hide and try to
preserve their knowledge. I believe it's by Isaac Asimov, but it could be
Ray Bradbury or Arthur C. Clarke. It started life as a short story, but was
later expanded into a novel. Your patron might enjoy it if he likes those
sorts of alternate astronomical influence stories.
