Barnes & Noble's web site has something called "writer alerts" that allows
customers who have accounts to be notified by e-mail when new books are
published by specific authors. I haven't tried it yet, though.

You could also try developing a good relationship with the clerks or manager
of your largest local bookstore. They always get advance notification of
what's coming (how else do you suppose Waldenbook maintains that big board
that lists the latest forthcoming blockbusters)?

They are offering prepub info through August at this point. If you register,
they offer some sort of newsletter or alert. I don't have that set up, so
you'll have to check that out on your own.

It may seem rather obvious, but have you checked the ads in your
professional publication? (ALA Booklist, Library Journal, etc.) Or in the
Times Book Review?

When I worked in a public library we received a
magazine called Forecast (or something like that) from
a vendor (Ingraham or Broadart) which I found to be
the best source of forthcoming titles, both fiction
and non-fiction. Does anyone have the address, and
know how one can subscribe? I am now a law librarian
and purchase no fiction titles in my job, but would be
willing to pay for a subscription for personal use.
Thanks!

Hi.
I just happen to have a copy of Forecast in my hot little hands....
It's put out by the Baker & Taylor Co.
Our subscription is free as we do business with that company.
The masthead doesn't give a price, etc. but says to order a mail
subscription to call 1 800 775 1800 or call your sales rep.
I agree, I think this is one of the better publications to keep ahead
of titles, etc. We also get some of their other publications which
also aid in selection.

Ingram produces something called Advance, I believe, which I see in my local

You can sign up to be notified of new titles by authors published by
Harper Collins. It's a fairly comprehensive list and you can search by
specific authors, titles, or browse by author or title. The only gripe
is that the titles that begin with "A" or "The" are listed
alphabetically under "A" or "The". :-)
I also find Baker & Taylor's Booking Ahead to very helpful as they list
popular titles 3 months in advance and it's easier to read through than
Forecast or Advance although not as comprehensive. We don't pay a
subsciption cost as we use B&T so not sure what it would cost to
subscribe.

You know, I haven't been following this thread,
so I apologize if I'm being redundant, but it
occurs to me that there's a new online product on
the market that does some really interesting
things by way of email notification. This is
EBSCO's new Book Index With Reviews, a database
built by the folks who brought us NoveList, with
Baker & Taylor contant, which allows a user to
pre-set automatic search sweeps for a variety of
things, which will generate emails about new
additions in that area of interest. That might
be a search of a particular genre, or a search
using review terms (a la NoveList), or something
else. I've only had a demo, and I'll need for
our library to sign up for a trial to fully
appreciate how this compares and contrasts with
other products such as BIP, but what I've seen so
far suggests it will be most useful for my work,
and one of the main things that drew me to it,
aside from the ability to search review text for
nonfiction as well as fiction, was this automated
email notification function.
