Our next Brown Bag Books booktalk group will feature book about Dads, Grads
and Newlyweds. Getting ready for June celebrations! We will be booktalking
about 25 books on these three topics.
We are looking for recent books or older books that still have interest.
Both fiction and non-fiction.
We are needing Newlywed suggestions. It's been pretty easy to find books
that end with a wedding. Any suggestions for books that deal with the trials
and travails of newlyweds right from page one?
Again, TIA for your suggestions.

two of my favorite books on dads:
Daniel Wallace BIG FISH a novel of mythic proportions
yes the book from which the movie was made. I missed the movie but the
book is an eccentric charmer and not too long.
Michael Malone HANDLING SIN in which Dad, still a wildman, takes off
from the nursing home, forcing his staid middle-aged son into a pursuit that
is part scavenger hunt and part revelation of family secrets.

Also in the non-fiction category is "What No One Tells the
Bride" by Marg Stark. I read it after I'd been married about
two years and wished I'd read it two years earlier.
From LJ (via Amazon): "Stark (Timeless Healing, LJ 5/15/96)
has written a readable self-help guide for brides-to-be and
newlyweds who are trying to adjust to this often anxiety-
ridden passage in life and to solve the consequent identity
crisis. Chapters touch on wedding postpartum, handling money
squabbles, falling prey to stereotypes, timing pregnancies,
and communication and criticism in a marriage. The text is
interspersed with comments from the 50 (mostly white, middle-
class) women whom Stark surveyed and interviewed. The result
is a "feel good" book whose aim is to reassure newlyweds that
their fears and anxieties are normal. Much of it reads like a
woman's magazine article, offering somewhat simplistic
advice: "breath deeply, and believe that your venture into
love will succeed." But Stark does have a clear, readable
style and a reassuring sincerity in drawing from her own life
as well as others. A bibliography of about 14 books (mostly
other self-help books) follows the text."

....my views are my own....
"We could, for example, have pointed out that Darwin's theory of
evolution explains how lower life forms can evolve into higher ones,
which in turn makes it entirely reasonable that a human should evolve
into an orangutan (while remaining a librarian since there is no higher
life form than a librarian)."

I'll second the Raney recommendation - as the book cover says, it's "The
story of the first two years, two months, and two days in the life of a
modern Southern marriage." I think it could come close to qualifying as
a "gentle read" as well.
