For horror/mystery, depending of course on how much blood she'll tolerate,
you could suggest John Sandford's "Prey" series (there's a new one just
coming), Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lecter trilogy, or even Stephen King.

Also try Jan Burke's latest paperback "Bones," the suspense drives the reader through to the end. It is the latest in the series that began with "Goodnight, Irene."

It's not as strong on the romantic elements, and it doesn't have the
'evil/supernatural' elements in Kay's current novels - just your average
serial killers. The voice isn't really similar either, but something in the
story seems to work for a read-alike.
