KGB agent killed by mistake

Here is what the patron knows about the book. He heard the author on
Milt Rosenberg's radio program (WGN radio, Chicago) about 30 years
ago. The author had a background in trade and commerce and the patron
is certain that this was his first novel. It involved a Russian KBG
agent that worked undercover in the White House. Because of a minor
clerical error, the Russians were led to believe that he was a double
agent and so had him killed. There was considerable detail about the
KBG headquarters in Russia and their culture.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
