Grisham's A Painted House

I hope you can help. My father recently read John Grisham's A Painted House. He really enjoyed it although he doesn't like Grisham's thrillers. He was raised in the South and I know the setting and time period were part of the attraction. He also doesn't care for lots of violence, sex, and bad language although he's not unreasonable about appropriate use. My dad is making me crazy looking for new titles to read. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks,
Teresa

"We could, for example, have pointed out that Darwin's theory of
evolution explains how lower life forms can evolve into higher ones,
which in turn makes it entirely reasonable that a human should evolve
into an orangutan (while remaining a librarian since there is no higher
life form than a librarian)."

Subject: RE: Grisham's A Painted House
Actually, Grisham's latest, THE LAST JUROR, I would describe as mostly
small town, southern fiction with a small thread of legal fiction
running through it. It reminded me more of A Painted House or Bleachers
than any of his other books. Another possibility is SWEET DREAM BABY by
Sterling Watson, which is a young man's coming of age story set in the
1950's in a small town in Florida, although there is a bit of a twist to
the ending, earning it status as crime fiction. Robert Morgan's GAP
CREEK and its follow-up, THIS ROCK, are set in Appalachia and might
appeal as well. If you think he'd like nonfiction, I would highly
recommend Rick Bragg's IT'S ALL OVER BUT THE SHOUTIN' and AVA'S MAN.
Also Homer Hickam has a couple of nonfiction books, the most famous is
OCTOBER SKY, which was made into the film the Rocket Boys, but he also
has some fiction too.
Hope this helps.

Jim the boy by Tony Earley
All over but the shoutin' by Rick Bragg (non-fiction)
Wish You Well by David Baldacci
And I loved Lost in Place by Mark Salzman (it is NOT
southern and it does contain some references to drug
use, but it is hilarious - you may want to take a look
at it to see if you think he would like it)

"The Voice of Bugle Ann" & "The Daughter of Bugle Ann," by MacKinlay Kantor.
Dog stories. Many of Kantor's short stories have been collected and are
set in the Ozark region; these might work for him too.
"The Yearling," "Cross Creek," Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. The latter is
nonfiction, about the region of Florida where the author lived for many
years.
"Where the Red Fern Grows," by Wilson Rawls, I think. Story of a young
Southern boy and the hounds he trains.
"So Dear to My Heart," Sterling North. Maybe not exactly the South, but
definitely hill country.
"Bristle Face," Zachary Ball. Another dog story, and it has a sequel.

How about RED SKY AT MORNING, by Richard Bradford? I remember reading
it as a YA when it came out in early 1970s, and it's been reprinted and
the library's book club is reading it. Starts in Alabama, moves to
Colorado (I think) during WWII, and a young man's journey to adulthood
during that time.

If he doesn't mind a female viewpoint, Evan Commager wrote two
delightful novels about coming of age in Carolina around World War I,
COUSINS and BEAUX.
And I'm sure you've already thought of Harper Lee's TO KILL A
MOCKINGBIRD, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
