A patron is looking for a book, perhaps 15 years old, about a bird
plotting an escape from captivity (zoo? aviary? cage?). The story is told
first-person(?) by the bird.

None of the titles in the Watership Birds thread came close.

This might be Sandeagozu (pronounced San Diego Zoo) by Janann Jenner? It came out 18 years ago (1986) and is the story of a python, a macaw, a coatmundi, a langur monkey, and a cascabel who plot their escape from a pet emporium in NY City. This story is narrated by the python.
