Best Sellers and other high demand titles

Our library is looking to improve our fill rate for best sellers and
other high demand titles. Currently we purchase a new copy for every 7
requests. Unfortunately some titles are months with waiting lists and
some customers don't realize we even own copies of say the Da Vinci
Code. Without increasing our materials budget, what does is your
library's policy for filling best seller requests?
Thanks in advance,
Lucinda Shelden

Lucinda, we added a new collection of the most popular fiction (and a
couple of non-fiction) titles that we call Prize Picks. These have a 7
day check out. Originally we limited to 1 per person, but we no longer
limit this collection. These copies do not satisfy holds and are not
renewable. It gives our patrons a chance to find popular titles on the
shelf each time they come in. This is in addition to the copies I get
for reserves, but have found that often someone who's waiting for a
particular book will remove their holds or tell the clerk who calls
about the reserve that it's no longer needed. I, too, will be looking
forward to responses to this query.

We also have a Rental collection. These titles are those that have
very long hold lists, even though we may own 20 copies of the title. (We
don't generally buy more than 20 copies.) The rental fee is $1.00 for a
one week loan, and $1.00 per day for extending the loan. The $1.00 fee
is paid upon checkout, and any further charges are paid at the time of
return or added to the customer's account.
This is a self-sustaining collection, so no funds come from the
materials budget. The funds for the original collection came from our
Friends group. After the rush is over for these titles, we delete them
from our collection and sell them to the public for $3.00.

We have found it to be a very successful program. It has seemed to
lower our hold lists on the new bestsellers and people love it when
they are expecting to wait a couple weeks and unexpectedly find it on
the shelf.
