Andersen's autobiography, The story of my life, was published in
English in 1871.
HTH,

I have a patron who wants to know what is the most authoritative
biography
of Hans Christian Andersen and the same with the retelling of his
works.
She's specifically interested in The Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina, and
the
Emperor's Nightingale.
Do any of you have a favorite version of these fairytales or one you
think
is most "authoritative"?

Probably the best bet, short of the original "Danish Fairy Tales and
Legends" (translated by Mary Howitt, 1846, as "Wonderful Stories for
Children"), is "The Complete Fairy Tales and Legends," tr. Erik Christian
Haugaard, 1974. It's the version that has the most points in my
bibliographical project, and as the title suggests, it's complete.
For a biography, you might try Andersen's own "The True Story of My Life"
(Mary Howitt tr., 1847), aka "The Fairy Tale of My Life: An Autobiography,"
tr. W. Glyn Jones, 1954.
