The closest match I can think of is Picking up the Pieces by Mary Sheepshanks.
Definitely set in Yorkshire, the main character, Kate is recently widowed, and
house or cottage needs lots of work.
I originally thought it might be Alexandra Raife, but her books seem to be set
in Scotland.
Also doesn't seem to be Katie Fforde's Stately Pursuits or Jill Laurimore's
Going to Pot, as the homes are much too big to be called cottages, and
Laurimore's characters are married.
Another possibility is Rose Cottage, by Mary Stewart.
