A colleague has a patron looking for a mystery series
set in Edinburgh. The books are most likely
contemporary and the main character's name is Alex.
The patron just finished The Da Vinci Code and thinks
this mystery series has similar messianic or masonic
(not sure which she was suggesting) themes.

I'm stumped. Any thoughts?

I think that you're looking for Katherine Kurtz's "The Adept" series -
