When I saw the movie, I was surprised that Inman died as I was sure he
lived in the book. I will have to find a copy and check.

I agree, it's confusing. I had to read the ending of the book several
times before I was really sure what had happened, but I was finally
convinced that he had died. Haven't seen the movie yet, but sounds like
it's true to the book.
