A library patron remembers reading a book in the mid to late '60s in
elementary school, that he'd like to find again. The main character is a
small boy who lives in a town where a refinery storage tank explodes. This
event happens at the beginning of the story, and that's the only thing our
patron remembers. It's not much to go on, but we're hoping, oh hoping, that
someone might recognize it.

children_; OCLC; Alibris; Amazon; Google; Stumpers & Fiction-L
archives; Loganberry Books solved mysteries.

Any help, ideas, or suggestions would really be appreciated!

Catherine,
If it's possible could you ask the patron if the story took place in Texas?
Back in the 1937, there was a huge gas explosion that leveled an entire
elementary school in New London, Texas, and there have been many stories
written about it. The gas leaked into the basement of the building and then
was ignited. As a result of this disaster, odor was added to natural gas to
try and prevent this from happening again.

You might try

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread by Don
Robertson.

It's set in Cleveland, OH and published in the mid
1960s. I believe he writes about the gas tank
explosion that happend in the 1930s. The explosion
actually happened - at the time, gas tanks were built
like water towers -- up in the air. After the
explosion, which devastated parts of the city, gas
storage regulations changed.

I can't swear to this because I'm at home and don't
have a copy in hand!

Thanks **so much** to Viccy Kemp and Jane Carle for making suggestions about
the book beginning with a gas tank explosion. _The Greatest thing since
sliced bread_ looks like it's probably the right one. We're trying it out
on our patron first, and will follow the other leads if necessary.
