Surely any bookstore set up to accept credit cards and/or Paypal
would cheerfully sell to anyone in the US (or in Patagonia), though
you may wind up paying an eye-opening amount for postage (at cost).
Very few, however, will be able to deal with orders involving
American checks, since bank conversion charges are truly
outrageous. (A few of the UK people I deal with do maintain both
UK and US bank accounts, but they're all science fiction
speciality dealers, which may not be of use to you.)
I've ordered books from dozens of bookstores in the UK, Australia,
New Zealand, France (and of course Canada) without problems, using
a credit card. (It's virtually the only thing I ever do use a
credit card for.)
You might want to check Amazon.UK for books desired and see what
the policies are of individual dealers offering same. (URL too
long to usefully cut and paste here, but a google.com search for
"amazon uk" will bring it right up.)

was happy to open an account for me, and sends invoices with the
shipment. The invoice shows both pounds & dollars; you can send a
check.
