Years ago I read a story (novella? novel abridgment) probably in Good
Housekeeping or one of the other women's magazines. The plot, as I remember it:
A woman goes to Kennedy Airport with her fiancee. They're supposed to be
going to his family (I think) on the West Coast. She's having jitters, and tells
hiim to go without her, and she'll meet him there, taking a later plane.
She gets into a cab to go to a different part of the terminal (?), then has
the bright idea to ask the cabbie how much it would cost to go to the West
Coast by highway rather than airway, so to speak. So he drives her to California.
I remember the trip as being quite funny as well as romantic. Did I mention
that I remember the author as being Donald Westlake? I've tried to track
this down unsuccessfully. I don't know if it was ever published separately.
Help from the collective brain would be greatly appreciated.
