I am doing a book discussion in February and have three books to choose from. If you were choosing one to do, which one and why? I have not read any of them but they all got excellent reviews. Please help.

I thoroughly enjoyed LYING AWAKE. If you chose this, try to get a copy of
the Recorded Book--the last tape is an interview with the author and ex-
plains why this secular Jewish man is writing about a cloisted Carmelite
nun, included is his first encounter with the superior of a clositered
convent with whom he still corresponds. We did THE SOLOIST for our Monday
evening book discussion which led many of our members to read LYING AWAKE.
You will also want to do some research on Hildegard of Bingen--especially
neurological manifestations of migraine headaches.

My book discussion read LYING AWAKE last year. Some found it difficult,
but all found it provocative. This brief novel gave us lots of fodder for
discussion which we all enjoyed. Personally, I think it is a beautiful
book. Good luck.

My book group read LYING AWAKE last year. We all
enjoyed it and had a terrific discussion. Several of
us have gone on to read other works by Salzman.
(Ditto-try to listen to the author interview at the
end of the Recorded Book version. I also had everyone
cluster around the pc in my office to watch part of
the video of "An Evening with Mark Salzman" in which
he compares
the experience of writing LYING AWAKE with performing
Bach's Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major which he also
performs. It ran as part of SummerFest2001 on UCSD-TV

Let me add my vote for Salzman, too. LYING AWAKE is a
beautiful, thought provoking book and with a lot to
discuss. Salzman's led a fascinating life too, you
might want to look at that in addition to everything
else that's been mentioned; a movie was made out of
his memoir, Iron and Silk, that I found at Blockbuster
(my library does not own it.)

If you choose Lying Awake there is an interesting article in the October 2,
2000 New Yorker magazine that would go along with your discussion. It talks
about the process that he went through writing this novel.
My group discussed this book, and some thought it was boring. But I
personally thought there was alot to talk and think about.
