character is a woman married to a police officer, but she solves the crimes.

This could be Anne Perry's Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. Thomas is a
police official, and his wife Charlotte assists him in solving a variety
of crimes. It is set in London (mostly) in the Victorian period

Sounds rather like Anne Perry's series
featuring the crime-solving duo of Thomas and
Charlotte Pitt.

If, on the other hand, it is truly SHE
solving crimes for the man, it could be Emily
Brightwell's Miss Jeffries books, in which
Inspector Witherspoon's MAID cracks the cases.

I suppose it could be either Monk or Pitt -
you might run some titles from either series by
your patron - they have very distinct title
styles... Failing that, the patron will surely
remember whether the detective is amnesiac (Monk)
or not (Pitt). Early/mid victorian (Monk) or
Late Victorian (Pitt).

I like the hits others have given, but just in case... Laurie R. King's
Mary Russell series is Edwardian and features Ms. Russell working with
husband Sherlock Holmes. Just in case.

Though I agree these are probably the Anne Perry
books, they might be Victoria Thompson's Gaslight
Mystery series. Thompson's are set in late 1800's New
York and feature midwife Sarah Brandt. She is the
primary investigator in the series and though not
married to a police officer, she is developing a
relationship with one.
