If, on the other hand, it is truly SHE
solving crimes for the man, it could be Emily
Brightwell's Miss Jeffries books, in which
Inspector Witherspoon's MAID cracks the cases.

Though I agree these are probably the Anne Perry
books, they might be Victoria Thompson's Gaslight
Mystery series. Thompson's are set in late 1800's New
York and feature midwife Sarah Brandt. She is the
primary investigator in the series and though not
married to a police officer, she is developing a
relationship with one.
