Hello,
Can anyone help me with this search. Just
about all I know at this point is that it is NOT
by Kathleen Woodiwiss.

Looking for an historical romance involving a
nasty father or guardian who wants to sell his
daughter/charge (a young woman, not a child) to
get rid of her (he doesn't like her) and to make
money. A young man who wants to marry her is
refused by the father/guardian, so he disguises
himself to get her. She doesn't want the young
man, but ends up with him anyway. There is
another woman who DOES want him, and she's
furious. At the end the guardian/father has to
flee. May be set in Britain.

This sounds like a book by Jo Beverley, perhaps AN ARRANGED MARRIAGE, but I
think there will be several other fine examples of this plot.

In this book, the evil brother conspires to ruin his sister, then sell her to
a man who's even more evil. Without giving too much of the plot away, She is
rescued by Nicholas Delaney, one of the "Company of Rogues." He offers her
marriage, but doesn't tell her he's involved in spy work for the British
government (kind of like The Scarlet Pimpernel - but NOT). His assignment is to
seduce a woman who supposedly knows about Napoleon's plans to return to power.
She is the woman who will do anything to keep Nicholas, despite his marriage.
(A mere bagatelle, to her.)

This book introduces the various members of Beverley's Company of Rogues. A
wonderful book, highly recommended, IMHO.

There's also a (medieval) Julie Garwood book where the heroine is at the
mercy of an evil brother, or step-brother. Honor's Splendour comes to mind.

This also sounds like Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati. Set in colonial
NY state, a young educated daughter of a landholder comes from England
supposedly to teach, but finds out it is really to marry a smarmy doctor in
order to pay off her father's debts. She refuses, and falls in love with
Nathaniel, the son of Hawkeye (from Last of the Mohicans) and she disguises
herself as a member of the tribe in order to escape, they flee to Albany and
marry then have to hide in the wilderness until her father finds out and
quits hunting for them.

First in a trilogy, excellent historical romance.

Hi, Binnie, & List.
I think I got a few different responses -
you can check the archives for them - none of
which rang the bell with our patron. I'm posting
my response to the list to muse/comment that this
seems a typical challenge with a romance search,
in that there are so very many titles produced,
and many have very similar plot-lines.
Complicated in this case by someone who has been
reading mass quantities for decades... I think
this would be the case with Westerns, too - "I
read this book in which a man with something to
prove comes to town..." It is interesting that
mysteries - most of which also have just about
identical plotlines - seem to always sport some
memorable quirk of the sleuth or setting or some
such that readers latch onto. I don't hear this
as much when folks describe a romance - "He
walked with a limp..." "She had a pet nutria..."
"It bent to the left..." (Still, we've had the
same phenomenon with mysteries, too - five
different series in which a midwestern suburban
sleuth is married to an ex-cop kind-of-things...)
