A friend is looking for a book, and she remembers quite a bit about. Just
not the author or title.

She read it about 25 years ago, so it was published at least before 1979.

It takes place during World War II.

There is a family with inept parents and three siblings.
Evil Brother Eric
A helpless, fragile sister.
An older, take charge, strong, brave sister.

The fragile sister marries a Japanese boy but they must hide in a cave
because of the hostility towards the Japanese at that time. She thinks they
both die tragically, possibly because Evil Eric betrays them.

The strong sister joins the military, goes to England and meets a strong,
brave RAF pilot. He disappears on a mission and she finds him 2 years later
in Italy suffering from amnesia.

The friend commented that she always wanted to send the book to Mel Brooks,
because she thought it had all the makings of a Mel Brooks movie.

I don't think she wants to reread it! Just wants to find the title after all
these years.

I don't know this book exactly, but Elizabeth Darrell has written some
family sagas set during WWII with all sorts of evil family
relationships. Most are out of print and there aren't descriptions in
either amazon or amazon.co.uk
