Help, please!

My patron read a wonderful small book in the fifties or maybe into the mid-sixties. He isn't sure when it was written or the author, but thinks it was written by a male.

The story is about two brothers and a young woman, who all grow up in the same town in the Midwest. She is in love with one brother, but marries the other, younger brother. The older brother, maybe named Frank, goes to Alaska to look for gold.

The patron stresses that there is no animosity or rivalry between the brothers. It's not a "love triangle," he says.

The younger brother and his wife have maybe 4 or 5 children. One of the sons goes to Alaska and makes a lot of money in some sort of business, and is a shyster type. When the brother, Frank comes home, he asks his brother, "what's wrong with that son of yours?" The brother says he doesn't know why his son is like that.

The brother who married the young woman doesn't seem to care much for his sons, but the youngest daughter is his favorite. The grandmother doesn't like her, though. She takes her out in the woods, in the snow, and leaves her. She dies.
