stumper starts with car crash in a ravine

A young man, maybe a journalist, is traveling to interview a politician
at the politician's estate in England. He stops to talk to another man
who is fishing in a ravine. As they talk, a car crashes into the ravine,
and the driver is killed. The journalist (?) rushes to the estate to
tell someone.
That's the beginning of the book. The patron also said there was
something about archery or target shooting (maybe involving guns). He
thinks it's an older novel, like pre 1950 and it might be Graham Greene
or Somerset Maugham, but I couldn't spot one that fits the
description...
Thanks for your help, in advance!
