Hi all
I have a patron who is searching for a novel he vaguely remembers the
opening pages describing a person in jail. There are two men involved in
this. One is large and he believes not too intelligent and the other is
small (possibly the other way around) and one has done the crime but has
convinced the other he is guilty. I believe it also involves women and a
tunnel and torture.

Sounds a bit like The Green Mile, by King. Not a novel, though, but a longish short story.

Thanks for the suggestion the patron doesn't think the other jailbird
escapes but is still in jail at the finish. He does say that the bad guy
kidnaps his victims (female) keeps them underground and burns them with
cigarettes. The other suggestion I had gotten was Kiss the Girls by
Patterson and he has taken that book home with him but as yet doesn't feel
that is quite right either. Thank you for trying

I don't believe the book you are think of is the Green Mile. That was a
novel issued in six serial pieces, and was later compiled into one long
novel and later made into the movie with Tom Hanks. It does not feature
women in any prominent way, and the torture is primarily mental, though
there are the usual handful of really horrific violent incidents.

I suspect you are thinking of Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. I
have not read that one yet, but in the movie version (simply The Shawshank
Redemption starring Tim Robbins) I can not recall there being any less
bright person being convinced that he had done the crime. The women are all
fantasies as I recall and I don't recall there being any burning with
cigarettes either.

I thought of it as a possibility too, but I don't really think that's it.
