Hi all
Please help me look good to my brother. He's searching for a book he
borrowed from his local library (in San Jose CA) but the library no longer
has.
Here's what he remembers from the plot: It's set in the late days of the
West. The protagonist is the ramrod/foreman of a ranch. But the days of the
cowboy are disappearing. The ranch owner's daughter is kidnapped and taken
to Mexico, so he goes after her. (fairly standard plot)
My brother can't recall the author's name, might be Freeman or Garcia.
But he says the author was either published by a Texas university press or
attended a Texas university "like TCU" says he.
Thanks for any help

Have you already ruled out Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy? All the
Pretty Horses, The Crossing, and Cities of the plain contain some of
these plot elements. I don't know offhand about the TCU connection,
but these "late" westerns are certainly considered literate fiction.
If he hasn't read them, perhaps he'd like to consider them anyway.Deborah T. Walsh

It might be Blood and Dust by F.M. Parker. The plot is similar, but the
setting is the West right after the Civil War. It is a pretty standard plot,
however.Joan Curtin
