This sounds like Abbot's Flatland (and the sequal Flatterland). It's
available in Dover editions.

Aside from the Dover etc. editions noted, it's available online at
http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/webbin/gutbook/lookup?num=201
and at
http://www.eldritchpress.org:8080/eaa/FL.HTM
Abbott did not himself write sequels, but there have been sort-of
sequels by other hands, including SPHERELAND by Dionysus Burger;
THE PLANIVERSE by A.K. Dewdney, and SPACELAND by Rudy Rucker.
Again, none of these are children's books per se, but bright kids
would probably enjoy them.
I have a vague memory of a "flatland" episode (a chapter or two,
not the whole book) in a children's book I once read, but I'm
blanking on what it was. Possibly one of Edward Eager's?
Incidentally, your message came through here as two postings: the
one below, with a line or two of computer code at the end which I
deleted, and a second message consisting solely of computer code.
I think your email system is set up to include some sort of
attachment or graphic image to the bottom of your signature,
which doesn't come through as intended when sent to a text-based
list like Fiction-L and/or to computers that have been set up to
not accept such.

The plot is based around the idea that one
"shape" character is in a one dimentional land, and
through the course of the book finds out about the
"third dimension" - towards the end may turn himself
into a three dimentional character.
There may be a sequel about the fourth dimention.
Plot is similar to a book entitled The Dot and
the Line.
