Rising Freshmen - If you will be in the ninth grade this fall, you should
choose a book of approximately 200 pages or more that describes a person's
struggle for INDEPENDENCE, either symbolic or literal. This can be a novel
whose characters pursue personal independence, a non fiction work describing
a battle for political freedom, or some similarly focused text.
Rising Sophomores - .......describes a person's JOURNEY, either symbolic or
literal. This can be a novel whose characters engage in a quest, a
nonfiction work describing a difficult voyage, or some similar text.
Rising Juniors - ......describes a person's struggle to distinguish between
APPEARANCE AND REALITY. This can be a novel whose characters engage in
deception, a nonfiction work describing the acceptance of one's own true
nature or that of others, or some similarly focused text.
Rising Seniors - .......features an author's or character's VOICE. This can
be a novel told from the first-person point of view, an autobiography or
memoir, or some similarly focused text.

I would also recommend for either sophomores or seniors a book entitled "I
married adventure: the autobiography of Osa Johnson." Osa Johnson was
married to Martin Johnson, who was a great explorer and photographer during
the twenties and thirties. Remember all those rampaging elephants that
trampled through the background in the old Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies?
Well, Osa and Martin Johnson shot that footage in Africa. It is very
interesting. Osa Johnson was the first white woman seen by the headhunters
in Borneo and the story of their lives in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) is
wonderful and fascinating.

Subject: Suggestions for High School Summer Reading List (long)
Hi all - A local high school has assigned it's students reading on a variety
of "themes", one for each grade, but has not give suggested titles. I would
love to have suggestions from the list, grade appropriate , excluding
things that are already commonly on HS reading lists (Huck Finn, etc.) .
Here are the descriptions of what the school is looking for, for each grade:
Rising Freshmen - If you will be in the ninth grade this fall, you should
choose a book of approximately 200 pages or more that describes a person's
struggle for INDEPENDENCE, either symbolic or literal. This can be a novel
whose characters pursue personal independence, a non fiction work describing

If they haven't already read it, any volume of "The Lord of the Rings" or of
one of David Eddings's sequences.

Dodie Smith's _I Capture the Castle_ (I just read it and it's
excellent, perfect for this theme and the age group.)
Louise Rennison's _Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging_ (1999):
This hilarious fictional journal of a year in the life of Georgia
Nicolson captures the joys and angst of being a teenager. Sequels
are On the Bright Side, I'm Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God and
Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas.
Sue Townsend's _The Adrian Mole Diaries_ (1985): In his secret
diary, British teenager Adrian Mole details every morsel of his
turbulent adolescence.
Paul Zindel's _The Amazing and Death-Defying Diary of Eugene
Dingman_ (1987): On his fifteenth birthday, Eugene begins a diary in
which he records all the bizarre events of the summer he spends as a
waiter at a ritzy resort in the Adironack Mountains
Bel Kaufman's _Up the Down Staircase_ -- an oldie but goodie.
The voices of both pupils and faculty members are heard in a
humorous and timeless account of life in an inner city high school.
Todd Brown's _Entries from a Hot Pink Notebook_ (1995): A high
school freshman keeps account of his family's failings, his friends'
problems, his gay identity, and his quest for spiritual peace.
Zlata Filipovic's _Zlata's Diary_ (1994). Non-fiction. Zlata, a
Bosnian teen, expressed her thoughts and fears during the year-long
siege of Sarajevo.
