We have a patron looking for an adult novel. She believes it concerns a
female character who moves from the east to a western state, probably Oklahoma,
Kansas, or Nebraska. The character lives in a sod house and teaches school.
She "meets a man," and one plot development may concern a turtle in the road.
She
I thought of Willa Cather and Bess Streeter Aldritch as possibilities,
especially "Miss Bishop," also perhaps a novel called "Prairie Widow." I also
mentioned "Lantern in Her Hand." The patron has read all of Cather; no match.
However, she believes this novel likely would have been written at the time
Cather was writing. I asked her how long ago she read it, and she said at least
ten years ago. She's not sure about Bess Streeter Aldritch.
I turn to the expertise of the list to solve this mystery. Thanks so much
for any help you can give! It would be marvelous if you could respond to
[removed]@aol.com - I'm a children's librarian in the midst of summer reading
and may not have the time to read my fiction-L postings for awhile.
Have a great weekend,
